Winsome is one of the very few young talented actresses in this school," says Tanya S.J. Selvaratnam '93, who performed with her in several plays, including Jet of Blood and Skin and Bone during Brown's first year. "She's someone I would expect will do exciting things in the future with her acting. When I see Winsome act, it hits me in the womb--She's a natural...

...that maybe is why my author Russell Banks got kind of desperate halfway through my story, which, because I got tired of my little kid name Chappie and called myself Bone when I was 14, is called Rule of the Bone (HarperCollins; 390 pages; $22). And that is how I got lost, and the story got kind of lost too. Not that I was doing that well before, with my mother and stepfather kicking me out for shoplifting, and having to crash at my friend Ken's pad, which was taken over by some really stupid but also scary motorhead...

My new rule as Bone was, "Basically don't bother your parents and don't bother the cops or one of them will sic the other on you, because to them, to all of them you're just another homeless stoned dropout dealing small-load boom to the locals." ...idea of Ryan as the comedian who copyrighted Cute is too limiting; she has dark tones in her palette as well. She's done terrific work as down-and-outers in Flesh and Bone and When a Man Loves a Woman and as the body-snatched bride in Prelude to a Kiss. The lovely wrapping is still there-but beneath it, the hint of fervid desperation, of a deep wound she both hides and nurses...
