...hydrogen atoms had achieved a still higher state of excitement, were throwing off a new kind of light. Comparing the voltages employed to produce these effects, Dr. Compton found that the ratio checked exactly with the theoretic scale of atomic energies postulated a decade ago by the Dane, Niels Bohr, who got the 1922 Nobel prize for physics in payment for his pains. Dr. Compton's work was the first actual confirmation of Bohr's theory, the first laboratory demonstration of the only atomic mechanism of which man has an apparently complete picture...

...Typical research accomplished with the aid of Rockefeller Funds: Prof. A. A. Michelson's (University of Chicago) experiment with light rays in a pipe-rectangle to check the Einstein relativity theory (TIME, Aug. 11, 1924); Professor Niels Bohr's (University of Copenhagen) atomic investigations in the infra-red region of the spectrum (TIME, Feb. 4, 1924), for which he last week received the Barnard Gold Medal from Columbia University...

Electrons in the outer circles may be radiated out by falling from a higher potential energy to a lower, and the frequency of radiation is proportional to the energy loss in the process. This is the Einstein-Bohr law of radiation, which has been amply verified in the past five years. As to what the electrons are doing when they are not radiating, chemists and physicists on the whole hold divergent views. The chemist believes the electrons are at rest (what I call "the loafer theory"), but the physicist believes they are rotating in orbits at enormous speed. The chemist...

...winner of the Willard Gibbs medal in physical chemistry, upheld the magnetic nature of the electrons, which, like any other current of electricity, become magnets when moving in circles. They travel in pairs, 180 degrees apart, neutralizing each other, and thus holding together all chemical compounds. Instead of the Bohr atom with its positive nucleus, Dr. Lewis claimed that the electrons, though having orbits, do not revolve around the "kernel" of the atom. No one has been able to work out a satisfactory path for these paired electronic orbits, but that fact does not bother the chemists so much...

Certain phases of Page's theory are generally accepted today, but much of it runs counter even to the Einstein doctrines, which are increasingly commanding the assent of physicists and astronomers. All recent Nobel prize-winners -Guillaume, Einstein, Bohr, Millikan- have been men who, if not hitherto internationally known, have been favorably regarded among their own scientific compatriots. Most scholars will require more objective evidence before they will approve so unaccountable a choice...
