...beyond its value as a crowd pleaser, the issue is less of a crisis than it may seem during an overheated political rally. Despite cries that the Clinton Administration has neglected America's men and women in uniform, the number of troops on food stamps is declining. In 1991, 19,400 troops received food stamps. By 1995 the number was 11,900, and by 1998 only 6,300 of the 1.4 million Americans in uniform were on food stamps. Even after accounting for the shrinking military, the number of troops receiving such aid has slid from 0.9% to 0.45% over...
...beyond the angry words and legal documents, the proposed remedy marked the culmination of 23 months of state and federal pursuit of Microsoft and represents a clear watershed for the computer and software industries. The ruling that emerges from Judge Jackson's court, and from an appeals process that could last two more years, will do much to determine the course of software development for decades to come--and with it the programs that countless companies and consumers...

Beyond the spectacle of large men grabbing and stabbing one another, Gladiator offers body halvings, decapitations, unhandings. A pity the slaves must die for the public's sport, and a pleasure that we get to watch. Violence is an issue directors love to deplore and exploit...
...studies released last week go beyond anecdotal evidence and find that playing violent video games can contribute to aggressive and violent behavior in real life. The researchers studied 210 college students during and after playing Wolfenstein 3D, a game they describe as "blatantly violent." After playing, students were rated according to their aggressive reactions and feelings of hostility. The researchers noted an increase in aggressive behavior after playing a violent game. In a study of 227 other college students, the researchers found increased delinquency among those who had played violent video games throughout their high school years...
