Graduated from Annapolis in 1877, Admiral Benson saw 47 years of active service before retiring in 1919. He was promoted to ensign in 1881 and from then until the outbreak of the war his promotion was steady. In 1915 he was made a rear-admiral and was appointed chief of naval operations. After his retirement in 1919 he was made chairman of the United States Shipping Board and in 1921 was appointed a commissioner on the Shipping Board by President Harding...
