...Arab oil embargo of 1973-74 gave Hawaii a frightening lesson in the vulnerability of its energy lifelines: the islands rely almost entirely on outside oil for fuel. Last year they used more than 45 million bbl., or $1.5 billion worth, nearly two-thirds of it from foreign sources. "Hawaii is more dependent on imported oil than any other state," says Kent Keith, deputy director of Hawaii's department of planning and economic development. But Keith points out: "Our potential for energy self-sufficiency may also be greater than that of any other state." In the past ten years...
...Protection Agency ordered a halt to the dumping of 2.7 million tons of cane waste per year into the Pacific Ocean. With a little help from the Government and a capital investment of some $25 million, planters discovered that a ton of bagasse produces the equivalent electricity of 1 bbl. of oil. Bagasse now provides 7% of Hawaii's electricity needs. But the state is not relying entirely on the depressed sugar industry for biomass. It is now considering pineapple waste and macadamia nut shells as energy sources. Tree farms have been planted for future fuel, and there...
Ironically, the latest crisis had its roots in what was supposed to be the country's economic salvation: the discovery in the late 1970s of oil reserves estimated to total as high as 200 billion bbl., second only to Saudi Arabia's supply. As the pace of oil development increased, public expectations rose, and the government of President José López Portillo launched a bold expansionist program. To pay for imports, private and public corporations increased their borrowing abroad. The crunch came when the current worldwide recession, along with the oil glut, sent prices tumbling...
...Hammer told TIME: "If you want elephants, you go where they are. But it has been one of our goals for a long time to make Occidental more domestic oriented." Cities Service has 10.6 million acres of undeveloped U.S. land, which are believed to hold at least 300 million bbl. of oil and 3 trillion cu. ft. of natural...
Perhaps the most glamorous small brewer is Anchor Brewing Co. of San Francisco, which was saved from bankruptcy in 1965 by Frederick Maytag, the great-grandson of the washing machine company founder. Maytag has developed a national following for his Anchor Steam Beer even though only 25,000 bbl. of the brew were produced last year. The beer, now available in 19 states, including Massachusetts and Georgia, is much praised by savants for its distinctively European taste, which imparts a somewhat heavier bouquet than is common among American brands...
