...geometric design on Austrian five and two groschen copper pieces to a swastika. The Treasury announced that these mutilated coins would not be accepted as legal tender. Most amusing was the Battle of the Bands. On the frontier near Innsbruck stands a great mountain, the Zugspitze. Up the Bavarian side clambered a sweating, puffing Nazi brass band. Up the other side went the band of Vienna's favorite Deutschmeister regiment. Near the summit both bands proceeded to frighten eagles from their eyries by blaring Nazi and Austrian patriotic songs, simultaneously...

Early one morning last week bugles rang out on the sharp mountain air of Innsbruck in the western spur of Austria that is the Austrian Tyrol. Tyrolese in their Lederhosen watched with amazement as the garrison troops marched forth, climbed into buses and rolled off toward Scharnitz on the Bavarian frontier. Off went one regiment of Alpinists, two Viennese infantry regiments, two batteries of mountain artillery and one signal corps company. Hofer is a great name in the Tyrol. Bearded, barrel-chested Tyrolean Patriot Andreas Hofer, most faithful friend of the House of Habsburg, captured Innsbruck twice from French and Bavarian troops during the Napoleonic wars, was captured by Italian troops and executed at Mantua in 1810 under Napoleon's orders. His tomb is a shrine for Austrian patriotism. From the Tyrol too comes Franz Hofer, an Austrian Nazi. ...Chief Warden Ludwig rushed down to help, was overpowered too. At pistol-point they snatched the keys from the warden's terrified wife, rushed Leader Hofer to a waiting automobile. In ten minutes every frontier post was warned. Shrewdly the Nazis did not make for the heavily-guarded Bavarian border, but for Italy, 20 miles away. On the Brenner Pass road an Austrian gendarme tried to stop them, was nearly run down, fired at the car, struck Nazi Hofer in the knee. At 5 a. m. the car was found abandoned three miles from the Italian frontier at Gries...

Just over the Bavarian border a tangible threat to Austria's safety exists in the form of 6,000 to 8,000 Austrian Nazi "exiles," living in German camps, drilling with German rifles. Millimetternich's next move was to lessen this danger by mobilizing 1,000 members of the Hilfspolizei (Assistant Police) and sending them to reinforce the present border guards. The Hilfspolizei are specially picked members of the officially unarmed anti-Nazi Heimwehr who have been armed and enrolled in the national government. Because of South Austrian murmurings that the Tyrol was playing too large a part...
