...months ago the truth finally became impossible to ignore. A tiny mound of dried mud appeared on the bathroom ceiling; when Patrick scraped it aside and peered into the quarter-size hole underneath, he saw them--pale white termites, hundreds of them, scurrying through the dank darkness above. "I freaked out," he says. "I grabbed a can of Raid and blasted it into the hole"--about as effective as using a water pistol on a herd of rampaging elephants...
Carneal, meanwhile, cultivated a reputation as a jokester but was depressed. Boys flicked water on him in the school bathroom and stole his lunch. Students said he had "Michael germs" and baited him relentlessly. He didn't cotton to the Boy Scouts or the karate classes he briefly tried, leaving him to stew over his indignities alone. High Art, by contrast, scores aces for slinky atmosphere but overdoes the seriousness, offering a somber, compellingly seedy, but occasionally lethargic story where the sexual roundabouts that "shock" its various characters are rarely if ever shocking to us. By the time Lucy's saddled with a cartoonish Jewish mother, Cholodenko seems as starved for inspiration as Great and Lucy...
