Yells of joy -- and relief -- rang through the basement of the First African Methodist Episcopal Church in south Los Angeles, which had become a kind of command post for efforts to head off a repeat of last year's bloody riots. Dozens of volunteers, gathered at the church to pray before walking neighborhood streets to try to keep order, joined hands nervously as the verdicts approached. At the word "guilty," all leaped to their feet, literally jumping for joy. Some hugged and kissed, others exchanged jubilant high-fives. Outside the courthouse, Rose Brown, a self-described community activist, cried, "Finally...
Among the proposals discussed at the Re-evaluation Committee meeting was for a Council-associated watchdog group, similar to the recently disappeared "Harvard Watch," to monitor its own business. With all of the slick stuff that goes on in the Canaday B basement, this might not be a bad idea. But wouldn't the Council do better to create a polling arm to gauge student opinion? Another proposal would move the Council in the opposite direction. Alan M. Grumet '94 proposed, in place of several existing Council committees, a Student Affairs Committee that would have an "information/propaganda" office...

Hence the surprise of last week's announcement by basement broadcaster NBC that Lack will head its news division, following such debacles as NBC's staged explosions during a report on allegedly fire-prone GM trucks. Though Lack lacks credits as a network-news czar, he boasts a host of awards for TV news programs he has produced, as well as experience working with the cream of video journalism, including NBC anchor Tom Brokaw...

A 51-year-old executive at a major musical-instrument manufacturer claims he was sent to sit alone in the basement under half the normal amount of lighting with no work to do until he quit. Workers urged to take early retirement, like older employees of a plant that Nissan plans to close in Zama, are not counted as jobless either...
That was before NASA came under severe pressure to cut costs dramatically and justify its decisions on what missions to fly. Budget constraints have already led to the cancellation of some projects and to the development of a bargain-basement mini-spacecraft that could scout out Pluto for a fraction of the cost of a typical planetary flight...
