Died. Harold J. ("Pie") Traynor, 72, former star third baseman and manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates; of emphysema; in Pittsburgh. Traynor joined the Pirates in 1920, and for the next 17 years his powerful hitting was matched only by his deft fielding at third base. He had a lifetime batting average of .320, drove in more runs than any other Pirate in history (1,273), and in 1948 was elected to baseball's Hall of Fame.
