...California's tiny, barren Cuyama Valley, more than a dozen companies had probed for oil, hit nothing but dusters. Only Los Angeles' aggressive Richfield Oil Corp. kept on drilling because, as one Richfield executive put it, "our geologists couldn't prove there wasn't oil." There was. Richfield struck its first oil last winter. Last week the company brought in its third well, an 8,000-to-10,000-barrel-a-day gusher that was "choked" down to 600 barrels a day. But it "proved up" the field and made the Cuyama strike the richest...

...when silver was discovered in Leadville, the barren ravines leading to California Gulch swarmed with feverish thousands. In the gambling halls and Sallie Purple's fancy parlors, the bonanza kings strutted and roistered. "Haw" Tabor brought in the rich Little Pittsburgh, then the $10 million Matchless. Silver was everywhere a man might throw his pick, and the picks were thrown everywhere. The picks were sold by Charles Boettcher who, in the end, found a slower but surer bonanza...

...Years is disappointingly barren of significant comment on Lovett's many important chores. For 16 years he lived at Jane Addams' famed Hull House in Chicago, but his recollections are those of a friendly, casual onlooker instead of the devoted worker he was. He aided all sorts of liberal causes as writer, speaker and organizer, usually with more energy and enthusiasm than his petition-signing, hat-passing colleagues, but this account of his impulsive championship of the underdog reads like a genial assurance that he couldn't say no in a good cause...

...current Judy is 16-year-old Barbara Whiting, pretty, pudgy kid sister of Songstress Margaret Whiting. Agent Barren Polan found her in a Hollywood record shop, where she was heard asking for some "really sincere" recordings. "I looked," said Polan, "and it was a perfect Junior Miss." It was, indeed. Barbara played a supporting role in the cinema version of Junior Miss, has grown up into an accept able lead. She wallows in a bubblegumbo of teen-talk ("Johnny had on a suede coat that just wouldn't quit!"), is really sincere about her role. She longs to become...

...Gregg, a past contributor to the magazine, has a gift for the manipulation of sound in poetic expression, which can be seen in such lines as "Proud parabolas upon the deep/Receding blue . . ." It is a pity that only one of his poems has been printed in an issue so barren of this kind of dynamic and beautiful writing. Joan Hyde's atmospheric "Night Picture" communicates through precise visual detail, but her other poem is less successful because it leaves sensuous impressions and starts trying to delve into the abstract...
