Last fortnight one of the oldest and fattest of these private handicrafters came before the public: Warner & Swasey of Cleveland, which has been dubbed "Tiffany of turret lathes," filed a registration statement with SEC, planned to offer (through Smith, Barney & Co.) 276,580 shares of common stock for sale. Now owned by a handful of Warners, Swaseys and old employes, the stock will probably be offered at less than $30 a share. Only about $1,000,000 of the $8,000,000 or so realized will go to Warner & Swasey...
Nastier burns were suffered by underwriters of two issues in the U. S.'s most up-&-coming industry-aviation. Captain Eddie Rickenbacker's Eastern Air Lines came to the market May 27 via Smith, Barney & Co. (which is still licking the wounds left by the ill-fated Pure Oil issue in the 1937 bear market). Barney Ewell will have Brown's brilliant Ken Clapp, Pitt's Harold Stickell, Penn's Palmer Hughes, and Yale's Bob Owen in the 100. In the 220, Clapp is the defending champion. Pitt's Frank Ohl and Colgate's Al Diebolt, another sensational Sophomore, will challenge the Penn State speedster...
With Al Blozis, the Georgetown giant, the favorite in the discus throw, second place may well go to Al Morro, B. C. Sophomore. California's Barney Wolf and Penn's Ed Beetem are the other standouts in this field...
...Barney Ewell, the Penn State Sophomore, and a Negro, is potentially one of the fastest dash men since the legendary Jesse Owens. The national 200-meter champion and holder of the World's Indoor Record for the 50-yard dash, Barney Ewell will be favored to win the 100 and 220-yard dashes and the broad jump next weekend. The lithe Negro already has run 9.6 for the 100, 20.8 for the 220-yard dash, and has broad jumped over 24 feet. With fast fields against him in both dashes...
