...Read this book not for its epic retelling of his long descent into dementia or its ax-grinding with the singer's fourth wife, Barbara Marx, but for its thoughtful, sometimes moving recollections of growing up as Beverly Hills-Palm Springs royalty with an intermittently available father whose flaws cast very long shadows. Though there's little about music here, another of Tina's observations puts Frank's shortcomings into proper perspective: "Had he been a healthier, less tortured man, he might have been Perry Como." Of course you can't balance a childhood against, say, "All the Way," except...

...this "hockey crease," as it was described to his amusement, had been requested by the Bush camp--the make-believe security zone was an invitation to rattle and challenge his opponent. Like a boy playing red light--green light, Gore encroached. "I thought he was going to hit George," Barbara Bush said the next morning. The ploy, along with Gore's purposeful stride around the stage, was about more than intimidation; it was meant to show that Gore, who constantly vows to "fight" for average Americans and used the word 10 times in the debate, would almost literally...

...believe his mother, Bush is the one you can trust. She said so in a message she left on Ford's answering machine (and thousands of others in Florida) in which she extolled her son's virtues. It was a smart move, given Barbara Bush's likability, unless you happen to think it underscores George W.'s lack of political maturity. It's like the guy needs a permission slip from Mom saying it's OK for Dubya to go on the field trip to the White House...

...current hour, though, belongs to Federal Judge Barbara Jones. During 10 weeks of testimony ending Aug. 22, trustbusters tried to persuade her to make the big banks align themselves with one brand if they'd like a board seat. They also asked the court to allow their banks to issue cards with Amex or Discover. The goal: increase competition between brands without impeding competition between banks...
