These men were subjected to a temptation that was too much for them. They were beset by a dishonest crew whose members dangled before their eyes the promise of "easy money". In very many instances ball players have resisted such blandishments. They know that crookedness in ball playing cannot long be covered up. The "fans" who crowd the stands in the ball parks are experts in the strategy and the technique of the game. They cannot be fooled in the long run. No dishonest scheme could long escape detention. ...University eleven, given the ball on their 20-yard line, started the scrimmage with a punch. A punt by Chapin, on the second play, was recovered by Tolbert at midfield when muffed by a black-jerseyed back. Eight yard dashes by Chapin and Johnson, topped by line plunges by Horween and Owen respectively, gave the University two first downs, and threatened the seconds' goal. Here, Johnson was nabbed for a loss before he could get rid of a pass, and, in spite of two successful forward passes, the ball went to the scrubs on downs...
