...Against that dreary background of official hubris, myopia and duplicity, it seems odd that former Senator Bob Kerrey is hitting newspaper headlines and television screens because of the revelation that his team of Navy SEALs killed innocent women and children while on a mission in the Mekong Delta. I reckon that thousands of grunts went through the same experience. But if what they did was appalling, it was comprehensible. In a way, they were victims of the machine that vaulted them into a hot, humid, shadowy, alien environment in which friend and foe were a blur, and all a potential...
...previous work that also deals with airplane hijacking. In this video, like in the magazine, he describes various airplane hijacking incidents. However, this presentation is more effective than the written version because of his sarcastically patronizing voice-over, reminiscent of an airline safety video. The sound effects and background music on this video are so maudlin that they drown out the screams and explosions of horrifying events. Rather than the conventional background of golden leaves and angels, the viewer instead finds a background of trees...
Trueba transports artists into the studio, playing them up against iridescent background screens, with colors ostensibly chosen (even if they don't always fit) to reflect each piece's prevailing moods, bathing the musicians in an almost aggrandizing glow. The effect is to catapult these artists to mythic, elevated status, which befits their talents, but not their music's spirit. The studio appears too sterile, too clean compared to the art, which has its roots as a dance music and involves a long history of Dizzy Gillespie's blazing, sweat-soaked solos or Mongo Santamaria's pulsing congas. Just...
