About a nucleus of nine varsity players next year's football team will be built. It's preliminary prospects, though extremely uncertain, as preliminary prospects always are, are good. In the line there will be veteran players for every position, except one end, and in the backfield, the position of quarterback will call for the only new regular. More-over, twelve men who were members of the first varsity squad last fall, but who did not win their letters, will return to the game in September. Add to these a number of first class men from the 1916 Freshman team...
...powerful backfield that C. E. Brickley '15, H. R. Hardwick '15, and F. J. Bradlee '15 will present from the beginning of the season, a string of backs who have already played a year on a Freshman team and a year on a University team together, should make a wellnigh unsurpassed backfield, lacking only Captain Wendell of this year's eleven. Miller and McKinlock from the 1916 team will make promising substitutes. At quarterback, however, will come the great problem of the season. Freedley and Logan, last year's substitutes, will return; but what seems a probable solution...
...first game of the season, the University soccer team defeated Lynn Fosse Saturday, by the score of 3 to 1. During the first part of the game, the playing was principally in the Harvard territory, and only the excellent work of the backfield saved the situation. The first goal was scored on a mix-up in front of the Lynn goal, when Graustein pushed the Lynn goal-tender across the line while he was holding the ball, preparatory to kicking out. A few minutes later, Johnston made a brilliant run down the field and scored a goal for Lynn. Shortly...
...backfield is particularly strong with Captain Barron, Rushmore, Francke, and Weston. The forwards are fairly fast, but only recently have they developed team work, and their shooting is still erratic. Nichols at goal played consistently all fall and should be a strong man for that position this spring. With this early start, and several practice games, Coach Burgess and Captain Barron should be able to develop an excellent team before the intercollegiate season opens...
...last season's team by graduation: Bennett, guard; Gibson, centre; Barends, end; and Morey, halfback. Engelhorn, who recently resigned the captaincy, will also be ineligible under the three-year rule. This leaves Dartmouth with six veterans to form the nucleus of next year's team, three of whom are backfield players. The offence is thus left practically intact, Morey's position being the only one to be filled. Murdock will probably be the selection for the vacancy. The line, however, will be left with only three of the seven men, Estep at tackle, Dunbar at guard, and Hogsett...
