...where they originate was not the nub of last week's symposium. What they are was the point. Dr. Compton declared again that they were electrons (and/or photons) coming to earth from beyond the atmosphere, or originating at the top of the atmosphere. When a photon hits an atom in the atmosphere, the atom emits an electron. When an electron hits an atom, the atom emits a photon. Dr. Millikan declares that photons appear first, Dr. Compton that electrons appear first...
Model Molecules. General Motors' Charles Franklin Kettering and L. W. Shutts had great fun constructing a model of what Professor Donald Hatch Andrews (Johns Hopkins chemist,G.M. consultant) told them a molecule of water must look like. They took two steel balls of equal weight to represent hydrogen atoms. For the oxygen atom they took a third steel ball weighing 16 times as much as each ''hydrogen atom." They also built spiral springs whose tension in relation to the weight of the three balls resembled the electrical forces which hold a molecule of water together. They joined...

...Thirty-nine of 48 pure metals which Professor Bridgman has squeezed become better conductors of electricity the greater the pressure. Iron becomes more rigid, glass less rigid. Zinc crystals compress seven times as much in one direction as in another. Most compressible of metals is cesium, presumably because its atom is highly complex. The greater the pressure on rocks, the greater the heat needed to melt them...
