Namiko San, a Japanese opera with libretto and music by Aldo Franchetti, features Tamaki Miura, Japanese soprano. Little Mme. Miura's fingers are like daisy petals in careful array. Her voice carries a suggestion of tartness. Her movements are all nicely studied. Her role is that of a 16-year-old maiden of ancient Japanese legend, in love with a Buddhist monk from the white mountain tops, possessed by a tyrannous Daimio, lord of the low, broad acres...
EAST INDIA AND COMPANY?Paul Morand?A. & C.Boni ($2.50). Perhaps when a Parisian sophisticate visits the Orient he is able to discover there an array of feminine beauty equal to that discovered in Paris, and an aroma of sophistication as pungently delicate as that with which he perfumes his handkerchiefs and his prose. ...critical may object to "Pickwick" because it has no plot--but it has as much plot as a revue and ten times the humor. Moreover, the imposing array of Wardles, Wellers, and Dickensonian whatnots, compensate for any lack of structure. "The Pickwick Papers" had no definite plot; to have invented one for its dramatic counterpart would have been to lose much of the spirit of the original...
