Never in history has a volcano exploded with such force before such an array of sophisticated monitoring instruments. The gear even includes a space satellite to measure particulate matter blown into the stratosphere. Yet in spite of all the detection capability, scientists have come away from the mountain basically with confirmations of what they already knew- primarily from observing volcanoes in Hawaii-rather than with any new and startling insights. Says Donald Peterson, the U.S.G.S scientist in charge on the scene: "Everything the mountain has done has been within the realm of our expectations...
...perfect limousine. The newest and most colorful form of testimonial needs neither vase nor gasoline. It is a bouquet of balloons. In virtually every major U.S. city, balloonery is, well, soaring. A cluster of two dozen rubber bubbles costs around $25, not too much more than a florid array of earthbound blossoms. At many ballooneries, the fee covers the cost of delivering the gaudy globules by a messenger dressed as a magician, a mime, a clown, Big Bird, the Mad Hatter, Groucho Marx-or even with an entire chorus line. AT&T is fighting back through its 1,800 PhoneCenter retail outlets around the country, which offer an equally broad array telephone designs to customers...
...libretto concerns a husband who becomes enamored of a swinging, unmarried friend of his wife's. Domesticity triumphs when the wife changes costumes, wigs and personalities to deflate the husband's romantic notions. Director Bliss Hebert wittily stages the action with an array of modish accouterments undreamed of by Schoenberg, including Visa cards and telephones with TV monitors; Maxine Willi Klein's sleek set looks like a sci-fi Better Homes and Gardens; and the cast, especially Soprano Mary Shearer as the wife, delivers a slyly spirited performance. Slight as it is, this is the kind...
