...such array of talent or of enthusiasm could the President muster on his side. The best he had were Hugo LaFayette Black, Alben Barkley, Sherman Minton, Henry Ashurst, Robert La Follette. From these the level of enthusiasm and ability fell rapidly away. His reliable wheel horses Robinson, Harrison, Byrnes and others were still true, but their attitude indicated that at heart they were no more than lukewarm. Not yet forgotten was the promise of the Democratic platform, made last summer, that if the aims of the New Deal could not be accomplished within the Constitution an amendment would be proposed...
...showed it to the long array of Congressmen who called on him at his office, to Andrew Mellon who presented the U. S. with $19,000,000 worth of Old Masters (see p. 41), to the diplomats of 50 nations who came to shake his hand at the first state reception of the season, even to the members of the Panama Canal Tolls Commission who came to talk shop with him. Bert Lahr is everything comical from the outdoor man who rhapsodizes on the uses of wood, to the juggler of jazz who squeezes all the latest kinder-gartenish pranks in noise into one amazing din. But the array is next to infinite, with Paul Haakon dancing, Gracie Barrie singing, and an abundant troupe of resplendent beauties trapsing about in the most enticing outfits. The entertainment, being far from uniform, is also not uniformly good. "De gustibus" you know, and what looks like joyous lustiness to some will strike...
...sister may one day be the Queen of Catholic Italy, has found that the Franco-Belgian Alliance of 1920 has now become an alliance of Belgium with a French Government composed of radicals, led by a Jewish Premier and bound by a treaty of alliance with Soviet Russia. This array of ominous facts was in the back of every Belgian subject's mind as he read the words of his King...
