...Afghanistan, meanwhile, a few are awaiting the second coming of the Taliban. Nial Ahmed sits in a field not far from the U.S. base in Khost. Bearded and wearing his turban battened down Arab-style, Ahmed, 30, proclaims his loyalty to the Taliban. "For now," he says, "we can do little because the pressure of the world is upon us." But, he adds with a glint of hope, "our leaders, our fighters, are safe in Pakistan." --With reporting by Massimo Calabresi and Mark Thompson/Washington, Syed Talat Hussain/Islamabad and Simon Robinson/Khost

...after tanks had leveled much of the compound, Israeli helicopters fired missiles at the remains of Arafat's redoubt. At 8:30 p.m. Saturday, Arafat called one of his Cabinet ministers, Nabil Shaath, in the Jordanian capital of Amman. His voice shaking with fear, Arafat ordered Shaath to call Arab and European leaders. "Tell them the Israelis are going to take over my office," he said. The Israelis said they sought the surrender of several high-ranking Palestinian militants thought to be hiding out in the compound...

Palestinian and Israeli sources told TIME that both Sharon and Arafat called Secretary of State Colin Powell as Israel mobilized its forces last Friday. When Bush woke up Friday morning in Crawford, he was informed of the Israeli assault during his daily national-security briefing. After that...

This, I imagine, is not the Arab Street of today. Demonstrators are packing Cairo University to demand that Egypt and Jordan sever their diplomatic ties to Israel. Already the president of Egypt has acquiesced by downgrading its diplomatic channels, but continues to turn back protesters from the Israeli Embassy with water cannons and tear gas. This is the atmosphere in which the Arab League will anxiously convene on Wednesday...

What is terrorism? The Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) was unable to define it during their three-day meeting in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia this week. Neglecting, for the moment, most Arab nations’ cowardly reluctance to condemn the suicide bombers, it is nonetheless easy to understand why the OIC felt little pressing need to give a definition to terror. If the Bush Administration, which declared the war against terrorism, has failed miserably to provide a definition for its war, why should anyone else step up to bat? This is, the Arab nations rightly implied, the United States?...
