...Hiss, Edward Herrmann (who played F.D.R. in Eleanor and Franklin) is the quintessence of Ivy League aplomb, but with a hint of arrogance and evasiveness. John Harkins, a close physical match for Chambers, is eerily effective as the tormented ex-Communist turned passionate antiCommunist. As Nixon, who built his political career on his role in the Hiss case, Peter Riegert (who starred in the film Local Hero) maintains a steady scowl but avoids facile parody...
Most impressive has been the aplomb of Peking and its fresh, well-groomed teams of multilingual emissaries. China has succeeded in courting Pakistan without alienating India; it has wooed the moderate gulf states and also convinced the Palestine Liberation Organization that Peking alone understands its plight. Most important of all, China seems close to recovering sovereignty over the British colony of Hong Kong on its own terms. Last week, while visiting Peking for the twelfth round of talks, Foreign Secretary Sir Geoffrey Howe became the first British official to concede publicly that Britain will return the colony to China when...
...cylinders, but only ten of them exploded. Very little was left of Suicide Driver Raad Muftin Ajeel but a fragment of one of his fingers. That was enough for police to identify the terrorist and, apparently, to round up most of his accomplices. While handling the case with singular aplomb, the Kuwaitis also detained scores of suspected dissidents for questioning and deported hundreds of others...

Irving showed much foresight in naming this dog Sorrow. First, so that after the dog dies, is stuffed and falls out of an airplane into the sea, the earnest young narrator can say "Sorrow floats." Later on in the movie this useful beast is at the heart of another equally profound statement...
...version offers more consistently inventive staging and better dialogue, which becomes a sort of merrily muttered accompaniment to the main comic theme. It was, of course, wonderful to watch the meltdown of Rex Harrison's icy aplomb in the original, and one cannot expect that of Moore; there is only a half-pint of him to melt. But the range and control of his facial expressions are a joyous astonishment, and the Ministry of Silly Walks should declare him a national treasure. Kinski too is back within her best range, cheerfully sexy instead of glumly sultry. In short, Unfaithfully...
