...excellent as the Beggar King of backstreet Paris, even Maureen O'Hara is adequate as a gypsy dancer who violates some sort of 16th century McCarran Act and gets the Dungeon in return. For my money, though, it's Laughton all the way. His sardonic leer and characteristic aplomb steal the show whether he is abducting a woman, riding gleefully on the swinging church bells, or swooping down from the sky to save Miss O'Hara from the hangman's noose. Lancaster & Co. flit in & out of Riff disguises, playing hob with tribal ritual and aplomb. Legionnaire Roland (Bullfighter and the Lady) feints through a free-for-all brawl, performing impromptu veronicas with a cape. A sexy blonde paralyzes the Legion by sashaying into the fort like a burlesque queen heading down the runway. All that is missing-and it seems ready to appear at any moment-is the sight of Bob Hope and Bing Crosby in burnooses with a few words to say about the script...
...they all have their moments. Miss Swanson, fresh from being batted around by Jose Ferrer in "Twentieth Century," confirms the fact that she is a terrific ham. After a slow first act, she adjusts to the requirements of the "bon mot" dialogue, tossing off her lines with graceful aplomb. But she lags badly in the serious moments, gesturing wildly, striking majestic poses, and trying to act. Fortunately, there aren't many serious moments...
Last week at Canon City came the kind of situation Roy Best greets with vigorous aplomb. Five long-term convicts tried to escape, attempted to free nine troublemakers in solitary. Wonderful Town (Sat. 9 p.m., CBS-TV) brings back to television the snowy shoulders and sunny aplomb of Faye Emerson. Feverishly sponsored by Pepsi-Cola with animated cartoons, bubbling glasses, jingles and urgent testimonials, the new show intends each week to salute a different U.S. city. The opening program was dedicated to Boston.
