When Egypt's President Anwar Sadat canceled his country's friendship treaty with the Soviet Union in March, he gave China a long-awaited chance to develop its own special relationship with Egypt. Within days after Sadat's action, Peking announced that it would give Sadat 30 new engines for Egypt's aging Soviet-built MIGS-a direct slap at the Soviets, who had refused to supply spare parts for the planes and had forbidden India...

...another cease-fire were backed primarily by Jordan's King Hussein and Saudi Arabia's King Khalid, two conservative monarchs who are anathema to radical Arabs. The U.S. also endorsed Syria's peace efforts, as did Moscow, although the Russians played no perceptible role in the crisis. Egyptian President Anwar Sadat, who was in Western Europe shopping for arms, strengthened his slightly tarnished credentials as a champion of the Moslem Arab cause by sending supplies to Jumblatt...

But I will get on my knees before no one but Allah." Amid ringing cheers, Sadat then demanded that the parliament unilaterally abrogate Egypt's treaty of friendship and cooperation with the Soviet Union because Moscow is no longer providing the military...

EGYPT is perhaps the only Middle East nation that has not fully replenished its arsenal since 1973. Reason: the chilly Cairo-Moscow relations led to a near cessation of arms deliveries from the Soviet Union. With cash provided by Saudi Arabia and other oil-rich states, President Anwar Sadat has been turning to Western sources of supply: to France for as many as 150 Mirage 5 fighter jets, Britain for up to 80 Jaguar fighter-bombers and 20 Westland Lynx helicopters, and Italy for electronic equipment. With French and British help, Egypt soon hopes to start constructing its own arms...
