...movie that elicited the term Brat Pack for a bunch of young actors was actually St. Elmo's Fire. This set of three films--The Breakfast Club, Weird Science and Sixteen Candles--should be named for writer-director John Hughes, who zeroed in on the light side of teen angst, or Molly Ringwald, his russet-haired muse. Hughes got the social pain of class rivalries, puppy lust and ineffectual parents, making it all funny and agreeable. Sixteen Candles is his Cinderella, The Breakfast Club his No Exit and Weird Science ... well, that one's just weird...

...Rands’ real life marriage translates into a genuine, modern relationship on screen. Shuli Rand’s performance is exceptional. After Malli leaves Moshe, he runs down the street and falls to his knees. Without swearing or physical violence, the actor expresses, with understated poignancy, his turmoil, angst, and overwhelmed loneliness. Likewise, Michal Bat Sheva Rand’s depiction of Malli seems an easy embodiment of hearty womanhood. In this fable-esque movie, however, the characters do naturally tend towards archetypes. Here, 2 Many DJs finally gets around to remixing Soulwax, and never mind the identity politics, it works to great effect. The pedestrian angst of Krack is recast with a tighter rhythm and a jubilant harmony; Miserable Girl is sped up to sound decidedly less like one. The rock soul of their originals remains, but they're more fun with dancing shoes...
