What set this "Real World" apart from the juicier editions set in New York and San Francisco was not the nasty infighting or the steamy on-set relationships--there were neither--but the atmosphere: a funky redecorated firehouse on Mt. Vernon Street in Boston. When the angst of our magnificent seven got to be too much to handle, the background shots of Faneuil Hall, the State House and even Harvard Square redeemed the episode. With the conclusion of the Boston "Real World," the firehouse is funky no longer and we've lost one of the few shows filmed in Beantown...
...house faction sort of reverse-hibernates through much of the warmer months, but they become much easier to find in the bleak of winter, when they brave all manner of snow and ice to see films about angst set amidst the very same snow and ice. Most humorously, the Kottonmouth King's "Suburban Life" recreates the spirit of idiotic teenage angst that hasn't been so perfectly dealt with since the "You Gotta Fight for Your Right to Party" by the Beastie Boys...
Fortunately, Your Own Thing has its own version of Twelfth Night's Clown in the three members of the band "Charlie" joins. The band, The Apocalypse, composed of War (Michael Davidson '00), Famine (Eric Fleisig-Greene '01) and Death (James Chakan '99), is obviously modeled on the angst-ridden, death-obsessed hard-rock bands of the '80s. They were a fine Three-Stooges trio of sorts, mocking everything Orson said with an entertaining mix of slyly witty allusions and slapstick humor. Following Sting's playful opener, the Smashing Pumpkins perform the most surprising track on the album, their original "Christmastime." Lead singer Billy Corgan has never seemed the sensitive type; on Lollapalooza 1995, the Smashing Pumpkins symbolized teenage angst and depression. On "Christmastime," however, Corgan sings gently and tenderly about the joy found on the faces of children at Christmas. Written from a father's viewpoint, Corgan carols of how "Christmastime has come/bringing toys for everyone/Christmas time has come...for you."
