HANDEL: THE TWELVE CONCERTI GROSSI, OPUS 6 (4 LPs; Angel). Using the same basic means- two violins and a cello set against a small orchestra- Handel achieved widely different moods. Yehudi Menuhin plays one of the violins in the trio and conducts the Bath Festival Orchestra with the same scholarly fidelity and high musical spirits that he displayed in his recent recording of the Water Music...
Music Tent. Chagall kept flower arrangements near him while he worked, and his design soon took on the shape of petals, which blossomed into a dreamlike homage to opera and ballet. His favorite composer, Mozart, occupies half of the big blue gore with angelic nudes and a bird playing The Magic Flute; Chagallic vignettes of Mussorgsky's Boris Godunov fill the rest of the blue space. On around the circle, clockwise, yellow-bedecked dancers pirouette to Adam's Giselle and Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake. Ballet is further honored in the red petal, with Stravinsky's Firebird...
VERDI: REQUIEM (2 LPs; Angel). When Verdi wrote his Requiem, most critics complained that it was too passionate and sensuous, but one sympathizer de fended him. Italians have their own emo tional habits, he argued, and should be allowed to "talk to the dear Lord in the Italian language." Conductor Carlo Mario Giulini does so here, and it is unlikely that anyone could be more eloquent. He does not set the Dies Irae ablaze as Toscanini did, but his performance has a steady incandescence. Honors also go to London's Philharmonia Orchestra, its huge chorus, and the four soloists...
Diary of a Chambermaid, like the Gallic classic on which it is based, begins as a gay little gibe at the manners and morals of a French provincial town. Like most movies made by Mexico's Luis Buñuel (Los Olvidados, The Exterminating Angel), it ends as a harrowing vision of hell on earth. In the early reels Buñuel respectfully inspects the comfortable surfaces of life in a "good family." In the rest of the film, with the help of his cunning heroine (Jeanne Moreau), he cruelly forces the family's closets and drags...
...outdoors, it is the Department of Sewers. The Fire Department is concerned with leaks occurring near electrical fixtures, and the Police Department if the leak comes from an adjoining apartment. The situation in New York, in fact, is so tricky and convoluted that, were it not for a volunteer angel named Ellen Straus, the city would even now be shoulder-high in stagnant water...
