PURCELL: DIDO & AENEAS (Angel). If the English had not loved spoken drama so well, Henry Purcell might have started a glorious operatic tradition in his country. As it was, Dido and Aeneas is Purcell's only opera, which he composed for a 1689 performance by the "Young Gentlewomen" at Josias Priest's School in Chelsea. This album boasts a more distinguished roster of singers, including Victoria de los Angeles, but Purcell's baroque is as airy and clear as a birdsong in an English meadow-and sounds just as repetitious. Sir John Barbirolli conducts with vivacity...

...woman since Geneviève de Galard-Terraube, the Angel of Dienbienphu, has won such tributes for courage. Author Truman Capote hailed her for "one thing: g-u-t-s," a Chicago newspaper remarked on her "spunk," and Co-Actor John Erickson said she "was like a bull in the ring." Inspiration for all the euphemism was Lee Bouvier, otherwise Princess Lee Radziwill, 34, younger sister of Jacqueline Kennedy, making her professional acting debut at Chicago's Ivanhoe Theater in a four-week run of The Philadelphia Story. SHOSTAKOVICH: KATERINA ISMAILOVA (3 LPs; Melodiya-Angel). This opera cost its composer considerable grief: shortly after he wrote it he was denounced by the Soviets for bourgeois intentions and vulgar execution. It is a brash work; at times openly satirical, at others tragically serious. The plot, based on Nikolai Leskov's story, Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk District, tells of a frustrated wife who eventually destroys the men around her. All the characters are thoroughly unsympathetic. The recording, part of Capitol's new import of Russian phonography, is disappointing. As the wife, Niconora Andreyeva has spirited dramatic presence...

ANDRÉ PREVIN ALL ALONE (RCA Victor). Without strings, without a big band, without a vocalist or chorus, André tout seul displays his musicianship on piano in a dozen serenely balanced ballads, among them, How Deep Is the Ocean, Angel Eyes, When Sunny Gets Blue and As Time Goes By. While his pensive probings honor the melody, he gives an added dimension with such ingenious and sensitive harmonic devices as playing in the key of F with his left hand in Dancing on the Ceiling, while gently stating the melody with his right hand...

Categorized Corporations. Indeed, acrimonious battles for company control have grown so common that Richard S. Nye, partner in the Manhattan proxy-soliciting firm of Georgeson & Co., says that "almost all corporations can be categorized as 'attackers,' 'attacked' or 'angels.' " To Indiana's Dodge Mfg. Corp., maker of power-transmission equipment, Cleveland's Reliance Electric & Engineering Co. has just become an angel. Confronted by an unwanted tender offer from Emerson Electric Co., Dodge two weeks ago worked out a stock-swap merger with Reliance...
