...gamble has been a losing one. Munich-based distribution company Intertainment took an undisclosed hit on the $70 million sci-fi flop Battlefield Earth, which it co-produced with U.S.-based Franchise Pictures. Although preselling the television rights across Europe helped offset some of the loss, that belly-flop may come back to haunt the company if stations think twice about buying in the future. Intertainment is betting on a $500 million, 10-film deal with Hollywood producers Anne and Arnold Kopelson, who were responsible for Outbreak and The Fugitive, to keep its credibility alive...
Most devastating, they say, would be a delisting of some or all of the 13 national monuments with Clinton's signature on them. This can be done by congressional action--and possibly by presidential fiat, although that has yet to be tested in court...
...refusal to vote for a full new election. Instead, the Knesset voted on a special "Bibi Bill" to allow any citizen to run in February's poll, which is only for the post of prime minister (the law had previously restricted the elections to members of the current parliament). Palestinian sources have indicated that the Washington talks have been convened under pressure from the Americans and Israelis, and have suggested that Arafat is wary of a repeat of the Camp David scenario where U.S. and Israeli...
Arafat may be weighing the imminent closure of the current negotiating "window" - and the expanded opportunity created by Barak's desperation - against the wisdom of making a deal with a lame-duck Israeli leader underwritten by a lame-duck U.S. president. Although Arafat has not ruled out the possibility of direct talks with Barak in the coming weeks, he may be content to go through the motions and wait to see where the political chips may fall. And, of course, to spend a good part of his time in Washington trying to cozy up to Colin Powell and Condi Rice...
