...1960s the Convention's leadership, although conservative by most standards, allowed a loosening of its strict biblical interpretation. It aligned itself--loosely--with moderate Southern Democrats. Then, in a now famous meeting at New Orleans' Cafe du Monde, two scandalized conservatives, Paige Patterson and Paul Pressler, hatched an insurgency. Packing the annual convention of 1979, they elected a conservative president and unearthed bylaws that amplified his power. "Baptist battles" consumed each convention until 1990, when the right wing prevailed decisively. The SBC then allied itself with the Republican Party, insisted on word-for-word biblical inerrancy and produced a drumbeat...

...what end? There was little to fault in the way Kim Jong Il comported himself at the summit (although commentators in Seoul wryly noted that during one of the celebrations he slung back 10 glasses of wine to five for President Kim). As the euphoria fades, however, the reality checks have begun. Some observers warn that this could be yet another North Korean plot, elaborately staged to make the South let down its guard. On the other hand, if Pyongyang is sincere, what next? The agreement signed by the two Kims is skimpy on details. Reuniting separated families...

Such heavy burdens aside, it is certainly not bad to be King. He has the use of gorgeous palaces all over the country, although he considers them "the office" and resides in more unpretentious digs. He works out daily with a trainer, hanging out at hotel gyms when he is on the road. On weekends he heads for a beach club in Rabat to race jet skis with friends. In Marrakech he is spotted at restaurants in the Casbah or at the city's fabled La Mamounia Hotel, where he recently startled some Cabinet ministers accustomed to free meals...

...initiate change may undermine budding democratic institutions like Morocco's parliament--and set him up for a fall if public opinion sours. "I cannot do everything," he hastens to say. "We must all roll up our sleeves." He makes no pretense to his father's stature as statesman, although he does not lack for opinions. He criticizes Europeans for seeing North Africans as terrorists, and when asked if he is satisfied with U.S. economic support, his answer is, "Absolutely not." He is blunt about Morocco's relations with Algeria, which he cites for prolonging the dispute over the Western Sahara...

That modicum of solemnity could very well be enough to carry Bush through to November with a minimum of angst over this issue. Although at least one scheduled lethal injection - involving one suspect's deathbed insistence that his alleged accomplice is innocent - has the potential to incite Gary Graham-level protest, and the sheer frequency of executions could be exhausting for Bush's handlers, most people expect Bush to simply stick to his guns and ride out the storm. Of course, the public, as Bush likes to remind us, is on the governor's side: While fewer Americans support...
