Physicists probing within the atom toward the ultimate constitution of matter already had their hands full with positive and negative electrons, neutrons (uncharged particles), protons (nuclei of hydrogen atoms), deuterons (nuclei of doubleweight hydrogen), tritons (nuclei of tripleweight hydrogen), alpha particles (nuclei of helium), and the theoretical but necessary neutrino (little neutron...

...Lewis was making heavy water, containing heavy hydrogen, soon after its discovery by Columbia's Urey. Lewis let Lawrence have generous samples and Lawrence was the first man to use the heavy hydrogen nuclei-deuterons-as atomic projectiles. They are more effective than protons, easier to handle than alpha particles...

During the past month workmen have been laying the concrete floor of a big new laboratory next to the old building. In this a tremendous cyclotron with a 220-ton magnet will be installed, hurling deuterons at 12,000,000 to 20,000,000 volts, alpha particles at 24,000,000 to 40,000,000. When completed the new building will contain biochemical laboratories and a clinic. San Francisco's late William Henry Crocker gave $75,000 for this project, the Chemical Foundation $68,000, Dr. Lawrence estimates that he needs about $35,000 more. Designer...

...schools picked him as best. This led to his first radio commercial. Last year the theatrical weekly, Variety, polied all the colleges and Hal Kemp and the boys came out first. In 10 years Hal estimates that he has played 300 college dances in 53 schools. Four Alpha Chi Rho's from Penn State followed his band one whole summer through the East and Mid-west to dance to his music every night, and they were no Fred Astaires either...

American's large social fraternity is Sigmy. Alpha Epsilon (109 chapters, 32,500 living members). One of America's most pretentious national fraternity conventions is that staged by GAB's officers and Emincut Supreme Recorder Lauren Foreman. Distinguished by its seriousness of purpose, a prominent place on its program is given to a Leadership School for the training of undergraduate fraternity leaders. Most serious are its general sessions, where discussions of ritual, scholarship, fraternity history and purposes do not let undergraduate delegates forget the great social aims and accomplishments of college fraternalism. Not unlike, other fraternities...
