...flying saucer plopped down on Washington's Mall. It carried two passengers, an alien called Klaatu (Michael Rennie), who had obviously visited us before, there being no other explanation for his perfect Oxonian accent, and a robot named Gort, who was played by a giant whose day job was doorman at Grauman's Chinese theater. The visitors represented an alliance of outer space planets and they were on a mission: to warn us earthlings to mend our warlike ways. Klaatu wanted to convene a conference of intellectuals and statesmen and to demonstrate the superior powers of the aliens by bringing...

...Like any expatriate who lands a plum management position overseas, Reid must now wrestle with an alien culture and a tricky language. But unlike other foreign execs, he must manage not a company but a national team - at a time of national crisis. "It's somewhere between Ted Koppel and an alien," impressionist Frank Caliendo said of Obama's voice during an appearance on Late Show with David Letterman, admitting he's struggled with his Obama impression (and not just because he happens to be a short, fleshy white dude). Another comedian, Donald Glover, told Tina Brown's Daily Beast that Obama...

Reid, a Democrat from Nevada, has pushed the Senate to enact comprehensive immigration reform in recent years. Last June, amid a fevered debate and nation-wide protests, the Senate failed to pass a massive immigration...

...Bolt, the first Disney animated feature made under the supervision of Pixar creative boss John Lasseter, has a premise straight out of Chihuahua: an adorable, pampered L.A. dog gets dropped into an alien environment and has to find its way back home, learning lessons of friendship, confidence and self-reliance en route. (It's also the premise of 140,000 other movies about animals, kids or hobbits.) Bolt fits this familiar mold without looking moldy. Its visual style is unpretentiously attractive, with a limber graphic line, and there's little showboating in the design or the dialogue. Directors Chris Williams...
