Ballad For Americans (Victor). Two-disc album of the patriotic spine-tingler first heard on the Pursuit of Happiness radio program (TIME, Nov. 20). Discounting the influence of Poets Whitman, MacLeish, Anderson and Composer Kurt Weill (Knickerbocker Holiday) on the script and score of Messrs. Robinson and Latouche, even sophisticated listeners should get a kick out of this hopeful musical U. S. history. Paul Robeson, as the Voice Nobody Knows until the last stanza, sings bravely...
...Symphony yesterday, as done by Bruno Walter and the Vienna Philharmonic orchestra and found it worth three dollars of anybody's money. It is almost as well rendered as the Koussevitsky-Boston Symphony of the same--and sells for half the price. Six ardent classical collectors who played the album reached the same verdict, and I quite frankly don't think that the majority of record buyers in this country, both old and new, are going to pay double for slight improvements in recording...
...Interesting to note that the tune on the back of the record, "One Evening in Havana" with its name changed to "One Morning in May," became one of Hoagy's most famous hits, rating a place with "Lazy Bones" and "Shoe Shine Boy" in the Decca album of his songs...
...meant to review that Chicago Style Album that Decca put out a few weeks ago and it's just as well I've let it run a few weeks before attempting it, because the records are definitely poorer after listening to them forty or fifty times. In fact they are strictly mediocre. Next week this column will discuss the individual records in the Album and the Chicago style in general...
