...athletic contests afford an excellent chance for the specialist to display his abilities, and only specialists enter them. In their case the entire energy of the system has been concentrated on the development of special powers, and every thing else is set aside as useless. This is the great objection to athletic exercises as they are at present conducted. Symmetry of development is never thought of, nor is it ever acquired by exclusive reliance upon any of our popular sports. Indeed, we would venture to select from any group of recognized athletes the oarsmen, the ball-players and the gymnasts...

...have paid up their subscriptions to the Reading-Room Association. Those who have given their names as subscribers should without delay pay the small fee required for membership. ...price of admission to their own concerts is undoubtedly their own business, but if the price is fixed too high for the general public can they complain if their audiences are small. It should be frankly admitted, I think, that there are many men who cannot afford the price asked to admit to a Glee Club concert. If the societies make a larger profit from high-priced tickets and small audiences than they would from low prices and large audiences, their course is very reasonable. But why cannot they try the experiment of tickets at 50 cents and enthusiastic audiences...
