...though the work is hard and the rations are short, no one seems to sicken or die. There are references to mass extermination, but that brutal reality is never vividly presented. Indeed, the prisoners don't seem to see much of their jailers, who, when they do turn up, act as if they've drifted into this film from a Hogan's Heroes rerun--barking incomprehensible orders to cover their comic ineptitude...
...teens. America's leading zeitgeist indicators are storming the Palace by the tens of thousands, in all their tribal, hormone-addled glory. They behave like adolescents everywhere, which is to say they dress badly, act obnoxious and travel in packs. Clans like Anarchy and the DiVas drape their slouching cartoon avs in baggy "sk8ter" duds and goof on one another with "scripts"--programs that let you string a strand of hearts around the neck of someone you admire or grandly urinate on someone you don't. ...latest video, singer GEORGE MICHAEL employs that wry British humor to spoof his conviction earlier this year for committing a lewd act in a public rest room. As a newly minted middle-aged person, I am no longer culturally relevant, but if I hang around long enough, maybe someday, if I'm lucky, I can be a novelty act. As Mufasa says, it's the circle of life...
Grizzly-war alert: Later this month the U.S. government is expected to unveil a plan that could eventually lead to the removal of this Yellowstone-area resident from the "threatened" list under the Endangered Species Act. Federal officials say protection of the 400 or more grizzly bears in the region where Wyoming meets Idaho and Montana has been a success, and that under ESA rules, the animals are no longer threatened. A final decision won't come before next summer, but in preparation, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is finishing a plan for turning bear management over...
