...provoke a rebellion and hence justify a purge. If true, the scheme worked because the Lugbaras decided to move. Brigadier General Charles Arube, a Christian member of Amin's Kakwa tribe, joined the conspiracy because he was worried by Big Daddy's purges of the Christian Lugbara, Acholi and Langi tribesmen. Arube was also irritated when he recently returned from a military course in the Soviet Union to find that a Sudanese mercenary had supplanted him as acting chief of staff...

...Uganda's economic situation deteriorates, Big Daddy is relying more and more on the backing of the army, which is riddled with religious and tribal jealousies. In an effort to strengthen his hand, Amin has been purging the officer corps of its Langi and Acholi tribesmen, who are mostly Christian. The rebel Anyanya (who took their name from the poison of a cobra or scorpion) lost a dozen men and considerable equipment. A bombing raid against a rebel base at Morta near the Uganda border caused nearly 1,000 civilian casualties...

...demanded an improvement in women's lot. One delegation complained that in Acholi a wife is treated "exactly like a goat," and asked plaintively: "Why should girls be educated when they will be treated like dogs after marriage?" Another argued that a husband should be prohibited from asking back his bride price if he rejects his wife after she has borne children for him. A resolution was passed recommending that husbands make clear their inheritance intentions by drawing up wills. But several delegates uneasily pointed out that this was a dangerous subject. A husband whose wife urged...
