...poor sell-outs don't cherish growing up absurd. In fact they're quite defensive about it, so much so that they cannot allow themselves to see alternatives other than the one they have taken. How else can they justify themselves--after all the social conscience doesn't pack up her bags in a huff and leave. Like God of Christian fable she waits and knocks insistently, perhaps pathetically, at the door after she's been thrown...

...piece humiliation is Malamud's game. One by one, he cuts off Fidelman's options-his little escape clauses from destiny. First, the would-be citizen of the world is sardonically reminded of the Jewish past he cannot shake by an absurd incarnation of the Wandering Jew named Shimon Susskind, wearing knickers and peddling rosary beads to the tourists at St. Peter's. "The name of the game is learning, not teaching," says Ed Meade...

...wanted to "grab us a piece of student power." I never made any such statement. I have not been involved in student government since February and will be graduating in a few weeks. The suggestion that I have a personal interest in "grabbing" any "student power" is patently absurd. Furthermore, I hope that the next time someone manufactures a quote and falsely attributes it to me he will at least have the courtesy to use proper syntax...
