Until it exploded in 1965, Watts was America's most under-publicized slum. Largely this lack of notice stemmed from the fact that Watts does not strike the eye in the same way that Bedford-Stuyvesant, Columbia Point, or Hough does. Absent is the visual oppressiveness of old six-story run-downs, crumbling brownstone block houses, and the vertical caskets of towering, post-war housing projects. If one is not paying attention, it's possible and perhaps even easy to drive from nearby Inglewood across Watts to South Gate or above on the Harbor Freeway without sensing that the community...
There were no beatings (for me at least) in this youth joint and the food wasn't too bad.... When told to do something I simply played the idiot, and spent my time reading. The absent-minded bookworm, I was in full revolt by the time seven months were...
...brevet jurists was proposed last year by the American Board of Trial Advocates, an association of Western lawyers. In terms of world esteem and political support, the U.S. has paid a high price for its solitary position. For the sake of Vietnam. South East Asia as a whole, to say nothing of the United States, it is of great importance that the security, prosperity...
Unfortunately, Sanasardo's protege choreographer and lead male dancer, Manuel Alum, was absent in these concerts; Jacques Patarozzi was an unsteady alternative in the "Footnotes" piece, but warmed up to a more constant and precise performance in "The Myth" and "Pain." Joan Lombardi, a firm, blue-skirted figure, added noteworthy strength and form to the selections. Yet even after all the refined play and posing, the bells chime and "Footnotes" blurs into gossip behind a water-colored fence. It's a Tom Sawyer delight...
