...noteworthy that a partial elective system was tried before 1850, but not working satisfactorily the system was abandoned for a few years, but was subsequently adopted again in a more complete form. The development of the elective system and written examinations has gone on side by side, the latter being necessitated to a high degree by the former. When lectures began to take the place of recitations and the courses became larger, it was found necessary to abandon the old plan of marking upon recitations. Thus it will be seen that there has been a decided move in the right...

There has been some talk about founding a literary magazine here, but the gentleman having the enterprise in charge has abandoned it in order to devote all his energies to foot-ball. Everything has been given up to that glorious sport - everything from chapel to poker. It would certainly be more lucrative to us if we should abandon everything but poker. ...presumably those who have consulted this "competent legal authority" are fully aware. Why then do they not use those means to obtain those rights, instead of seeking a doubtful vindication by the hazardous and expensive method of starting a new paper? It would seem that this extraordinary readiness to abandon legal rights shows a lack of confidence in the validity of those rights, though so confidently asserted, and that the scheme of starting a new paper, instead of being the protest of a deceived and outraged majority, is the last resort of a beaten and desperate faction...
