...world being born was Miró's own, a unique galaxy of pictorial enchantment residing on the border between surrealism and abstraction. The show traces the young Miró's zigzagging path between his family farm in Montroig, near Tarragona, and the heady Paris art scene of the 1920s. Similarly, he zigzagged from earthy ochers, greens and browns to brilliant fantasy hues; from oil painting to collage and construction; and from works crowded with biomorphic creatures to watery cosmic spaces marked only by a floating line, a dot, a sphere or - most often - a sex symbol or two drawn from...
Vintage is penetrating the racks in less obvious ways as well. Innovative designers such as Koi Suwannagate are "re-purposing" used apparel and fabrics--from 1920s silk slips to '60s men's sweaters--to create new collections. And major designers--like Prada, whose printed circle skirts for spring are unabashedly reminiscent of the '50s--are more overtly drawing on bygone decades for inspiration. The result of all this is that the past is now an inextricable part of present fashion--on the runway, on the red carpet and on the rack. What's old is new, and what...
...Orleans mainstay Trashy Diva originally sold only vintage when it opened its doors in the French Quarter in 1996. The shop added its own two-piece collection--a "charm gown" and a silk-charmeuse flapper coat--in 1999, when it became more difficult to find used designs from the 1920s and '30s in good condition. Today, the store sells mostly its (expanded) Trashy Diva line, with pieces that look as if they might have been plucked from Daisy Buchanan's closet...
...View of Diabetes Before Dr. Frederick Banting and his colleagues at the University of Toronto isolated insulin in the 1920s, doctors tried to treat diabetes with high doses of salicylates, a group of aspirin-like compounds. (They were desperate and also tried morphine and heroin.) Sure enough, the salicylate approach reduced sugar levels, but at a high price: side effects included a constant ringing in the ears, headaches and dizziness. Today's treatments for diabetes are much safer and generally work by replacing insulin, boosting its production or helping the body make more efficient use of the hormone. But researchers...
...VENICE SIMPLON-ORIENT-EXPRESS It's arguably the world's most romantic train journey?and who would want to argue, with so much romance in the air? Since 1883, the Orient Express has set the standard for a certain kind of luxury travel. Today, the train's original 1920s and '30s carriages are decorated with marquetry panels, finely cast solid brass and Art Deco paintings. The traditional London-to-Venice trip takes 31 hours and costs $2,400 one way. But the train's trophy trip, which mirrors its virgin journey from Paris to Istanbul, takes place only once...
