Though only about 1% of the Taj's surface has been affected, the damage is already distressingly obvious. Marble that was once a bright white is now streaked with pitting that gives it a yellowish cast. Some red sandstone of adjoining buildings has actually begun to flake. The chief culprits are believed to be coal dust and sulfur dioxide fumes; these help create sulfuric acid that attacks the calcium carbonate of the marble. ...most mysterious piece in the show (and the least reproducible) is Victory Over Sin, 1980, a room designed by West Coast Artist David Hammons. What one sees, by the light of a yellowish ceiling lamp, is three gray walls covered with a repeated motif of two kidney shapes, each with a pair of fuzzy black dots, which, on close inspection, turn out to be human hair. Indeed, it is sometimes difficult to distinguish between NGU and gonorrhea by physical examination alone (though gonorrhea tends to produce a yellowish discharge).
