Although Adams dosed his speech at the community center with anti-British vitriol, the main thrust of his activities in recent days has been an attempt to put the peace process back on track. Adams believes the I.R.A. would declare a new cease-fire if all-party talks were firmly scheduled. Once the proper negotiating package is put together, says Adams, "the I.R.A. will see it quite clearly and renew the cease-fire...

...BILL Clinton was assured a second term as President [CAMPAIGN '96, Nov. 20]. Ironically the assurance came from an unlikely source: a new Republican named Colin Powell. All that is left of the 1996 presidential campaign now that Powell has decided not to run is the rhetoric, vitriol, insults and blame. This will be Bob Dole's last hurrah, and afterward everything will go back to being the way it was in Washington. CARLOS R. CASTILLO Miami...

The claim that African-American applicants compete solely against other African Americans is clearly at odds with what is stated in Professor King's description of the admissions process. King's description of this process is contained in his original article, upon whose selective interpretation the Standard article is based. According to him, affirmative action policies are not employed until after primary cuts have been made. After the primary cut, minority applicants...

International organizations, especially the U.N., come in for special vitriol, since they act as such handy substitutes for an overall sense of powerlessness, the ceding of sovereignty. Buchanan often reminds audiences of the 15 Americans killed by friendly fire while on patrol protecting the Kurds in northern Iraq. "The Vice President of the U.S. issued a formal statement," Buchanan declares with quiet fury. "He said the parents of these young Americans can be proud they died in the service"--and then he pauses--"of the U.N." After the moans and boos of the crowd subside, he continues: "I tell...

...same mass-produced Hollywood moneymaker does not true love make. The good thing about a film is that it offers you an easy topic for conversation over coffee afterwards. If the film is great, you can both wax eloquent about it. If it was terrible, you can heap vitriol and scorn on it together. Read a review in advance, so that you have at least one intelligent thing to say no matter what ("Say, don't you think this was the most insightful commentary on Generation X since 'Reality Bites?'") After that is over, you can move to other topics...
