...underwing engines even if the center engine in the tail explodes and severs all hydraulic control lines for the rudders and elevators--as in the case of a DC-10 that crash-landed in an Iowa cornfield in 1989. The Swissair MD-11 successfully underwent a thorough inspection just over a year ago, and Swissair's safety-and-maintenance record is solid. But did this model have a history of wiring problems? Since 1992, the FAA has issued a number of airworthiness directives expressing concerns with the electrical systems of MD-11s. Though A.D.s are not necessarily unusual...

...guess everything we physicians were taught in med school about interpreting nonverbal cues and other interactive signals during an examination was useless. You suggested limiting e-mail to "routine inquiries" such as requests for referral. This would indicate that a particularly complicated medical problem has arisen, demanding a thorough clinical investigation by a person's present doctor. ...Starr, don't shed a tear; TIME Washington correspondent Viveca Novak says that the dogged prosecutor was just being thorough: "The part of Starr's case that Foster was involved in is essentially closed already. This was just one last road he needed to travel down." One might imagine that Starr, as a lawyer, might be a little relieved himself -- just as long as Bruce Lindsey keeps breathing...
