They were unable to hold this lead, however, for Thayer, with a short, fast stroke, quickly caught and passed them. Randolph and Russell, who were nearest the Cambridge shore then fell a little behind, rowing a slow, clean stroke. Claverly and Mt. Auburn street were following, nearly even, about a length of open water behind Thayer. Just above the Harvard bridge, Russell and Randolph put up the stroke, and gained rapidly on Thayer, but the latter was able to sprint although it had been rowing...
