...place from which they derived their name, North House, led by Al Bennett '00 (founder of the QSS), possessed an uncanny ability to work a crowd, with Bennett entering beating two drumsticks together to stir up noise. It was a polished stage act; more than that, it showed talent. Bennett's voice and the clear, crisp sounds of his guitar (especially on the slinky guitar lick that opened "Chinese Cabdriver") worked well with the smouldering voice of the group's other lead singer, Becky Warren (a Wellesley senior). And because so much of the movie centers round Carter and Carter alone, the other characters are left curiously two-dimensional, with no real reason for the audience to relate to them, and it's hard especially not to moan the unused talent of the marvelous Hannah in particular. ...portrayal of Dan, and some great scenes with Brown's character Ava. Cody McMains is a delight as Ava's 12-year old, punk-haired boyfriend, and up-and-comer Laurel Holloman matches McTeer's spunk as a close friend of Mary Jo. Director O'Connor had some terrific talent to work with for this film, and gives each one of them a chance to shine-or, in McTeer's case, to sizzle...
