...just as absurd to expect an uncoached crew, nine, foot-ball, lacrosse or cricket team from Harvard to beat a well coached team of another college, as it would be to expect a set of Harvard men who had received no instruction whatever in Greek prose or Calculus to surpass in an examination in these studies a set of carefully taught men from some other college, Our victories in rowing, thanks to Col. Bancroft's better coaching, proves the principle; our defeat in foot-ball, thanks partly to Mr. Camp's better coaching, proves the principle also. Moreover, coaching...

This is the dangerous part of the season for freshman elevens, when the novelty of the game has begun to wear off and the change of weather makes the practising a little harder. It was thought, however, that '87, anxious as they seemed to be to surpass the record of their predecessors would not allow any temporary inconveniences to stand as obstacles in the path of improvement. Their unexpected defeat seemed to thoroughly disconcert them and a corresponding depression has followed their former confidence. No better lesson could be taught the freshmen than the one they received at Andover unless...

They are strong where we are weakest, namely in the halfbacks, and they endeavor to play the entire game in that part care of Mr. Robinson they even surpass the remarkable physical condition usually characteristic of Princeton teams, and this fact alone more than explains their recent defeat of Wesleyan at New York. They fairly played the Connecticut men off their feet in the last three quarters, while at the end they did not seem half worked...

...shortness of the clavicle unite to prevent her from reaching high balls. These defects, together with the unusually large size of the triceps extensor muscle, make it hard for the female to serve successfully. Were it not for these anatomical peculiarities of the female, she would doubtless far surpass the male at tennis. She can run faster, see more quickly, and is not so easily confused. But the scientific fact remains that tennis is not a game for the human female. The game of parlor croquet is best adapted to the peculiar construction of her bones...

Yale is cautioning her freshmen to guard as zealously against a tie in this fall's game as they would against defeat, so '87 must not only strive to equal the record of last year's team, but to surpass it. With the good material already so abundantly furnished there is no reason that they should not do this if they will settle down to the hard work which can reasonably be expected of them. Such a warning should be unnecessary to a majority of the candidates, for many of them have previously met college teams during their practice...
