Tibione proved to be no cureall, but the results summarized by Dr. Hinshaw suggest that it will be a valuable adjunct to streptomycin. It is no good against miliary (generalized) or meningeal tuberculosis, where streptomycin is most effective. It is "most impressive" in tuberculous laryngitis and enteritis. ...dialogue is mostly stock gangster talk, and the actors, generally accenting the wrong words, throw their eyes around as though they were at a tennis match. All the same, the film has moments of hard cynicism. The credibly forlorn scenes between the heroine and her brother (Arthur Kennedy) barely suggest a relationship that the Johnston Office might have scrutinized more closely. And Ladd's scenes with a cold and seedy blonde (June Havoc) show a consistent disconcern with what Hollywood knows as real love. Trying for and missing the punch of Double Indemnity, waltz-paced Deadline is further debilitated...

Unfortunately, most of the would-be guinea pigs had read into Krieg's cautiously worded study a promise that was not there-i.e., the prospect of an immediate cure for their specific afflictions. What the carefully qualified report did suggest was the exciting possibility that experiments in the direct application of electrical stimuli to the brain or peripheral nerves may one day enable some of the blind to see, the deaf to hear and the lame to walk again-after a fashion, anyway...
