...left to imagine because I haven’t seen this treehouse for 16 years. Every time my family revisits the neighborhood, I’m forced to subsist on a teasing peek into the backyard. The sense of voyeurism hardens the feeling of having been cheated of what was once mine. That treehouse stands as a testament to a past built and lost by my grandfather...

Which makes it all the stranger that the ANC has done so little to improve the region. Today much of the Eastern Cape is still typified by mud-walled, grass-roofed huts without running water, where boys ride horses, girls carry babies on their backs and families subsist on cattle, sheep, goats, chickens and maize. A new power grid has reached most homes - but supply is erratic. Most roads remain unpaved. In Mthatha, 74% of the population earns less than $150 a month and 43% are unemployed, according to a June 2008 report by the South African Medical Journal...

Families who subsist on food stamps and live at or below the poverty level can't afford supplements, and there are many such families. According to Dr. Frank Greer, chair of the American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Nutrition, 55% of infants born in the U.S. are eligible for the national Women, Infants and Children feeding program, which provides food for low-income mothers and their children up to age 5. But because the program is food-based, it does not include vitamin and mineral supplements...
