...premier dance companies of the nation, the Boston Ballet nevertheless suffers from a preponderance of style over substance, evident in its most recent lavish dance spectacles. In the 1998 season, audiences were treated to a special-effects laden production of Dracula, followed by this year's equally extravagant The Princess and the Pea. The Nutcracker, now in its 34th annual rendition, is no exception to this bigger and better mentality. Boasting oversized sets and props, more than a ton of white confetti and a cast of over 400, "lavish" would be an understatement...
...basic good stuff is still there. The band's best and perhaps most distinguishing feature--the surprising little vignettes of sound which switch you, with no attempt at subtlety, into a deliciously different musical genre for a few bars--makes itself felt in force: there's a '90s-style funk surprise in "Ode to Maybe" and even a hint of opera in "Red Summer Sun." Once again, the album demonstrates 3EB's versatility: the songs are funny and sad, hard and soft, discordant and, at times, quite beautiful. A- --BENJAMIN A. COWAN
...remix is to transform. Starting from the base of Faithless' sophomore album Sunday 8 PM, the recently released Special Edition includes, in addition to the original, a companion Saturday 3 AM disk chock full of remixes. Sunday 8 PM occupied a unique point in Faithless's eclectic style from grand house music to funky pop, but was certainly much more of a success in Europe, where the British group resides, than Stateside. Only "Insomnia" from their first album Reverence has made much of an impact. Unfortunately, the Special Edition may end up facing the same fate, since Saturday...
