...dialect. Whether dialect writing is of any philological value may well be questioned; that the reading of dialect is tiresome to a degree is certain. The same amount of labor and skill wasted upon such productions would be better bestowed on efforts to acquire mastery of a true English style and in developing powers of invention. Few are those who can overcome the handicap of dialect and produce a story worthy of the name in the strange forms of tongue so affected by some writers. ...Review, The Outlook, and other publications. Five years ago he published his History of the Unreformed House of Commons, a very comprehensive and scholarly work in two volumes. By the large amount of patient industry which it represented, the soundness of the opinions which it contained, and the vigorous style in which it was written, this work at once commanded wide attention, and it is mainly because of the accurate and broad scholarship displayed in these volumes that Mr. Porritt was invited to give instruction at Harvard. ...question is always with us. Professor Royce's recent discussion of it is here made the occasion of two more, one on either side. The present reviewer finds the so-called reply to Professor Royce not at all to his taste. The tone of the article is unfortunate, its style violent, its though confused. The following paragraph is typical in its hopeless lack of logic: "Parenthetically as to 'loyalty', it is one of the moral values that I least admire. It usually implies a subjection of your own sentiments and convictions. A high enterprise needs no appeal to loyalty...
