Something in Forsythe's uncomplicated manliness appealed to Alfred Hitchcock; maybe Hitch saw him as a domesticated Cary Grant, or Jimmy Stewart with better posture. He cast the young man as the lead in the grindingly whimsical 1955 comedy The Trouble With Harry. Playing a bohemian painter, when that occupation could seem a gentleman's calling, Forsythe is surrounded by a trio of Vermont eccentrics, all of whom believe they may have killed Harry. Forsythe, naturally, is the cave of common sense they retreat to for sage advice ("You're not supposed to bury bodies whenever you find them...

...movie is vividly atmospheric and fun from a musical perspective (especially if you, like Jett, love rock 'n' roll), but it can't escape the conventional clutches of the biopic formula. "Girls don't play electric guitar," a patronizing instructor tells Jett (Kristen Stewart, nicely punked out) in an early scene; she responds by plugging in, screeching out some notes and swearing at him. It's a bit of a letdown, an easy shorthand to explain the motivations driving Jett and her bandmates. The Runaways themselves may have been fresh and exciting, but with this scene, the movie tells...

Then Dakota Fanning gets ahold of the film, steals it from Stewart and seduces us utterly. Fanning plays Cherie Currie, recruited at age 15 by Svengali Kim Fowley (a witty Michael Shannon) to sing and provide what he calls "jailbait sex appeal." The movie was based on Currie's memoir, Neon Angel, so we get a much fuller picture of her home life than that of anyone else in the band, even Jett. Currie has an alcoholic father (Brett Cullen), a foolish mother (Tatum O'Neal) and a sister, Marie (Riley Keough), who in real life is an identical twin...

...major studio. Nor will Noah Baumbach's Greenberg, a potential-breakout romance that won a sheaf of favorable reviews and has an actual movie star, Ben Stiller, in the title role; it took in $1.1 million on 181 screens. The Runaways, starring Dakota Fanning and Twilight's Kristen Stewart, is already DOA after two weeks. About as close as a non-Hollywood film can get to hit status is the $9.2 million cadged so far by Roman Polanski's The Ghost Writer, which has had great word of mouth from most of those who've seen it - but not nearly...
